Living as a True Missionary

After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
Luke 10:1-2

Jesus sent out His disciples two by two and told them not to take anything: “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece” (Luke 9:3). Later, Jesus sent out another seventy disciples in the same manner. He knew they needed to go and see for themselves that their needs would be met. He taught them to live by faith like a true missionary––dependent on the Lord for everything. These examples show true missionary work.

George Muller lived his life as a true missionary. He was born in Germany and later came to faith in Christ through a home Bible study he attended. God directed him to become a missionary in Bristol, England, in the early 1800s, where he founded schools and orphanages. In every situation that arose, he never once asked for funds––George truly trusted in the Lord. He had a firm resolve to never ask for funds or borrow money. He went to God in prayer for every need, and God never failed him.

One day, George had the children in the orphanage sit at the table while he began to place the plates and cups, knives and forks. But where was the food? Having no food to serve them, with the children, he began to pray. Then, all of a sudden, a person knocked at the door. One of the milk wagons had broken down, and the gentleman, not wanting the milk to go to waste, gave what remained on his wagon to the children.

Oddly enough, another knock was heard at the door. This time a man decided he would give bread to the orphans. It was enough bread to feed all the children. George and the children had prayed and waited upon God, and He faithfully provided their needs. Again, where God leads, God provides.

Be assured, if you walk with Him and look to Him, and expect help from Him, He will never fail you.
