The True Call to Missions

The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.
Acts 13:4-5 NIV

In order to be a true missionary, there has to be a true call and a true anointing of the Holy Spirit on a person’s life. As we continue to study Acts 13-14, God’s Word will teach those who are called to be sent out, how to become a true missionary.

When there is a true call to missions, know that God is the One who will supply all your needs. Barnabas and Saul never asked the elders who prayed for them, “Before we go, can you please supply our needs? We are low on cash.” You will not read that in the Bible. They all prayed and had fasted, and being directed by the Holy Spirit, these two men went by faith into the mission field! I believe God wants us to go on the mission field by faith and to trust Him. Later, the Apostle Paul would say, And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. God will supply your needs!

For a long time, I have taken many trips into the mission fields within South America. On occasion, I have encountered others who have come from America to work as missionaries. It was very discouraging to see some of these Americans on the mission field, because they continued to live like Americans––above the people––instead of living among the people. You cannot do that! If a person is going to be a missionary, they have to count the cost and trust in the Lord for everything they need.

There are also people who are called to support missionaries. I encourage them to give to those who have a true call to missions. Make sure funds are given to those who will use offerings wisely to reach the lost. We thank God for those who give to missions at Calvary Chapel. God is the One who touches people’s hearts to give to missions.

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
