Come to Your Senses!
...if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
2 Timothy 2:25-26
There is an old British phrase that states: “taken leave of your senses.” It means “to lose good judgment.” When a person refuses to accept truth as found in the Scriptures, they have made a very bad judgment call, and in a way they have lost their senses. They are also lost in their sin and still remain ensnared by the lies of the devil. They are completely taken captive by him to do his will.
There is a spiritual battle behind the scenes for the souls of men and women. The problem is the devil is a deceiver––a liar. It is the truth of God’s Word that sets people free: And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:16). When a person repents and by faith, asks Jesus Christ to be their Savior, then the truth of the Scriptures make sense. They will literally come to their senses which means “to recover self.” They are set free from the devil and return to a sound mind.
As a Christian, share the Scriptures with those who oppose you, with gentleness and patience. Through your witness, and the Word, God may grant them repentance so that they may come to know Him. You cannot beat people over the head with the Bible. That approach usually does not work! Use humility in sharing God’s Word––that usually works.
Believers have the Spirit of God to teach them. Non-believers have no understanding of spiritual things as stated in 1 Corinthians 2:13-14:
...the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Remember, we are in a spiritual battle. Pray for people around you who need to hear the Gospel truth that they may come to their senses.
The Spirit of God takes the Word of God and makes the child of God.
