Investing in Eternity

“You have sown much, and bring in little; you eat, but do not have enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”
Haggai 1:6

Are you investing in eternity? Haggai the prophet preached a set of fiery sermonettes to stir up the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem, as they had failed to build the house of God. Were they investing in eternal things? No. They were seeking their own selfish comforts. Haggai knew his God and boldly spoke the Word of the Lord to the people. The message he gave was not intended to make them comfortable, but uncomfortable––their priorities were all out of order.

I believe there is nothing wrong with having things. God blesses people financially––with prosperity. Think of all the people who have come to America, thankful to God for their freedom from persecution and for the wealth they have been able to accumulate. They enjoy capitalism, buying whatever they want. When a person has a better job, a house, and a nice car as they get comfortable, often times, they forget about God.

It is only when priorities become out of order that major problems occur––a bank account cannot be number one. Understand, those who are rich cannot take any of their riches with them, everything will be left behind–– just like the poor, naked we came, and naked we leave this world.

There are people who fail to understand the importance of coming into God’s house to worship and hear the Word of God. The Lord is going to bless them with joy and spiritual prosperity. They are investing in eternity. They may not see all their spiritual dividends on this earth, but God is keeping track of all of them––everything they are doing for His kingdom––all of their time and resources they have invested.

What counts in eternity is what we do for Jesus Christ––period.

Give me five minutes with a person’s checkbook and I will tell you where their heart is.
