Light of the World
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:14
Millions of people in this world walk in darkness and sin without any conviction. They are ignorant of God and remain unashamed of their sin. Worldly men come to work on Monday morning boasting about their sinful behavior and everything they have done over the weekend. They uncaringly tell how they have spent time cheating on their wives with attractive girls they have met in the gym.
Men who enjoy sexual adventures can be among those esteemed people in society––politicians, policemen, firemen and businessmen. If men do not repent of their sin, one day it will catch up to them. Their marriages will suffer and so will their children. Men and women who go to night clubs and bars, seeking companionship, usually find no real satisfaction because it only lasts for one night. What happens when they wake up the next morning? They have the same emptiness and problems.
Christians are to be the light of the world––as a city on a hill. As they shine, they can be a light to draw people out of the darkness––to know Christ, the Light of the World: “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). Remember, we used to be just like the nonbeliever: For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (Ephesians 5:8).
Walk in the love of Christ and give the Gospel to those lost in spiritual darkness, for they are perishing in their sin. Wait for the right opportunity, and when led by the Holy Spirit, share your testimony. People may ask you, “Why do you no longer drink, have causal sex, and party?” The answer to them is, “Jesus is in my heart.”
The Bible is not the light of the world, it is the light of the Church. But the world does not read the Bible, the world reads Christians! “You are the light of the world.”
