Please God by Sharing
But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Hebrews 13:16
What is one of the first principles parents teach their children to do with their toys? They teach their children the importance of sharing their toys with other children. What else does this teach them? It teaches them not to be selfish and to think about others instead of themselves.
The Hebrew believers learned the same concept. They were not to forget to do good and to share the blessings of God with others. They were not to be selfish or turn away from someone’s need and ignore it. They were to share, and, in doing so, their actions were well pleasing to God.
This same concept is found in many places of the Bible. James 2:15-16 teaches us that our faith in Christ is seen in our actions:
If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?
Jesus taught His disciples that their faith was displayed in their kind actions toward others. Any good deeds they had done for others were to be considered as if done for Him. As King and Judge of the nations, a day will come when these actions will be weighed:
“ ‘...for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me’ ” (Matthew 25:35-40).
When was the last time you shared and put your faith into action?
He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given.
