A City Yet to Come

For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.
Hebrews 13:14

Around the world there are beautiful cities––Paris, London, Dubai, Rome, Tokyo and Sydney––to name a few. Jerusalem is a beautiful city called the city of God (Psalms 46:4), and the city of the great King:

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in His holy mountain. Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.  God is in her palaces; He is known as her refuge (Psalm 48:1-3).

Another name for the city of Jerusalem is the city of Salem, meaning “city of peace.” In Hebrews 7:1 NLT, we read: This Melchizedek was king of the city of Salem and also a priest of God Most High. Melchizedek may have been a theophany of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament.

Have you heard of the name Ariel? It is an endearing name given to Jerusalem. Ariel means “Lion of God,” and it is symbolic of Jerusalem’s strength, majesty, and its deep connection to the Tribe of Judah (whose emblem is the lion). It is found in Isaiah 29:1, when judgment was being pronounced upon the city: “Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt!”

Some of us have visited and seen many of these cities around the world. We have learned the spiritual significance of Jerusalem as a city, but none of these places are our permanent home. As Christians, what are we looking for? We are seeking the heavenly Jerusalem––seeking the city to come. Our forever city is in heaven, a heavenly refuge where God will be with us forever.

...the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God...
~Revelation 21:10~
