A Faithful Saying
This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.
2 Timothy 2:11-13
What Paul is alluding to here is dying to self––dying to our fleshly desires. How do we die to self? We have to reckon the old man––our sinful nature––to be dead. In Romans 6:12-14 Paul helps us to comprehend what that means:
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace (Romans 6:12-14 NIV).
I would explain it this way: “Do not make sin king of your life! Put your sin to death. Crucify it! Let Christ reign over your life! We are not to take advantage of God’s grace.” Galatians 5.24-25 instructs Christians: And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. By walking in the Spirit, you will become enabled to overcome sin.
As you obey the Scriptures and live victoriously for Jesus Christ, God will use your life in such a powerful way. Did you notice that the word endure is used once again? Yesterday we learned to endure under suffering for the sake of others, but this time we are encouraged to endure suffering in the hope of reigning with Jesus Christ.
Paul ends on a more serious note: If we deny Christ, what will happen? He will deny us! Yet even when we are faithless, He is faithful. Jesus cannot deny Himself. God's sovereignty and faithfulness remain untouched. He is always the same––loving, kind, and powerful.
The glory of God's faithfulness is that no sin of ours has ever made Him unfaithful.
