Are You Ready for Your Departure?
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering,
and the time of my departure is at hand.
2 Timothy 4:6
Paul knew in his heart and mind that his departure from the world was imminent. He told Timothy, “I am leaving––the time of my departure is at hand.” Timothy needed to listen and understand what his mentor was saying. Paul’s time was up––death was on the horizon. Young Timothy needed to step up and take over––to continue the work of the ministry.
Paul declared he was poured out as a drink offering. His life was ebbing away. He was at the bottom of a dark and dismal dungeon where you could hardly see anything. He was badly treated––beaten. But he did not want Timothy to be concerned. Why? Paul knew his life was being poured out like a sacrifice before his God.
In the Old Testament, the drink offering followed the burnt offering, and there was also a grain offering as prescribed for the people of Israel (Numbers 15:5-10). The drink offering was symbolic of the outpouring of a life which was fully devoted to the Lord. It was an act of deep worship.
In the New Testament, Paul used the same concept in relation to his life, which was being poured out for the sake of the Gospel. After he came to Christ, his entire life was lived sacrificially––poured out––every single drop of his life. Is your life being lived in the same manner? Are you being poured out like a drink offering in service to your Lord? The more of self you get rid of, the more Jesus can pour Himself into you.
Think about it. Did not Jesus pour out His life for us?
Jesus Christ was made broken bread and poured-out wine for us, and He expects us to be made broken bread and poured-out wine in His hands for others.
