Let Me Entertain You?
...because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
2 Timothy 4:3-4
Why do people become deceived by false teaching? They do not know God’s Word. This is why they often embrace fables––a reference to false doctrines that oppose sound doctrine. The word fables is “a word used of gnostic errors and of Jewish prone fables and genealogies.”
In today’s churches, there is a definitive shift away from teaching people God’s Word. I am seeing this more often. Church services have begun to entertain people. In turn, the people have become accustomed to being entertained, and they expect bigger and better entertainment instead of receiving sound, biblical teaching.
Sadly, churches have lost the priority of teaching God’s Word. They place one Scripture verse on a big screen and teach from that verse for about ten to fifteen minutes. People have stopped bringing their Bibles to the service because the main focus is worship, or they have a huge concert. So for about an hour, the congregation is entertained, and then they go home without receiving a biblical teaching. What happened to systematically teaching through the Bible, line upon line?
What kind of church are you attending? Make sure it is biblically based. Check to see if you are being entertained or you are being taught the Scriptures? Check their statement of faith. What do we believe at Calvary Chapel Golden Springs? We believe the Bible to be the only inspired, infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21). We believe there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:1; Deuteronomy 6:4; John 10:30). We believe in the deity of Christ (John 10:33); His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14); His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15); His atoning death (Ephesians 1:7); His Resurrection (John 11:25); and His Ascension and return (Acts 1:9-11).
Where the Bible is esteemed as the inspired and inerrant Word of God, preaching can flourish. But where the Bible is treated merely as a record of valuable religious insight, preaching dies.
