Look Into the Mirror
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
James 1:23-25
James separated two actions into two categories––hearing and doing. You can be a hearer of the Word, but what good is that if you are not a doer of the Word? James compares a person like this to someone who looks at themselves in a mirror, but as soon as they turn from the glass, they forget what kind of person they really are.
Are you a genuine Christian? Be honest with yourself; otherwise, you become a hypocrite––an actor. Look in the mirror. You may see a nicely dressed person outwardly, but inwardly you are not right with God. In your relationship with God, you must to put into practice what is being preached from the pulpit. You hear a Bible study, but listening is not enough.
If every Christian became a doer of God’s Word, can you imagine what would happen? We would have a great revival! No one would be able to stop the church’s influence––not even Satan. The reason that the Church cannot be effective in the world is because so many believers are hearing God’s Word, but they are not doing what God says. It is through God’s grace that we are enabled to obey Him. When we obey, His love, joy, and peace will be evident to others, and we will have a strong testimony.
If we continue to obey God’s Word, James tells us we will receive an incredible promise. We will be blessed in all our work––in everything we do. Honestly, all we have to do is seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33), and then the Lord will honor us. Placing God first in our lives aligns us with His perfect will. God will continue to bless us and He will be glorified.
Love for God is obedience; love for God is holiness. To love God and to love man is to be conformed to the image of Christ, and this is salvation.
