FRIDAY July 4, 2025
Independence Day
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your
unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.
Psalm 33:20-22 NIV
Every year on July 4th, we are reminded of the high cost of our country’s liberty. Thirteen colonies united in their cause against the tyrannical rule of King George III and his high taxation. Although there were differences among the colonies, there was no division among them in their decision to go to war against the British––a war that lasted over 7 years.
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence. It was written by godly men who recognized the Supreme Judge of the World––God. On September 3, 1783, a treaty was signed in Paris, whereby Britain agreed to recognize the sovereignty of the United States and to formally end the war.
Although we are free and celebrate our freedom from Britain, we are currently still in very dark days in our nation. We have strong enemies––nations that oppose us from the outside––but we also have enemies from within. They seek the demise of our sovereign nation by their brutish behavior. The ungodly are roaming our streets, causing mayhem, anarchy and riots––chaos.
The United States of America is enduring such perilous times. Lawlessness continues in our cities. We pray for government leaders, but to whom must we go to find help? Our help lies in God: My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 121:2).
We need to pray like never before. The independence that needs to be seen and experienced is the saved soul made independent from sin.
The Declaration of Independence laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity.
