The Implanted Word of God
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
James 1:21
James understood the power of God’s Word. They were exhorted to lay aside all filthiness and wickedness in their lives so that their hearts would be cleansed and ready to receive with meekness God’s Word. Imagine, it is as if the soil of your heart has been prepared. Wickedness has been uprooted and God’s Word, like a seed, has been implanted. It will need to be watered by God’s Word to grow. It has life-giving properties; it has the ability to save our souls.
The word meekness refers to “humility.” It is in humility that a person is able to have an open heart to hear from the Lord. If they are harboring anger or bitterness in their heart, they will find it hard to hear from God. Listen, no one can receive God’s Word with meekness unless they turn completely from their sin. Sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2).
God desires that a person address the bitterness and unforgiveness that has grown deep within their heart. They do you far more harm than good. Unforgiveness and bitterness will eat you up like a cancer. What did Jesus say about forgiveness? In Matthew 6:14-15, He said: “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
I take what Jesus taught literally. People take the Word of God too lightly. They need to make sure their hearts are right before God. I remember the day I got saved; I forgave my father for the things he had done. I felt a genuine love for my father; I saw him as a lost soul.
Do you have someone who you need to forgive? It could be your father, mother, brother, sister, or someone else who has hurt you. You need to do your best to try and reconcile with people––forgive and forget.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
