Preach God’s Word in Every Season!
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
2 Timothy 4:1-2
Paul wrote to Timothy in such a powerful way. His last words are memorable. They would always be in the mind and heart of Timothy, as they are with us today. As Paul faced the end of his life, his tone and demeanor showed he had no regrets. He loved what God had called him to do. Even in his sufferings, he had joy.
As a son in the faith, Timothy received a second charge from Paul. He was to remain faithful in his ministry to God and the Lord Jesus Christ. He had a great responsibility. Paul reminded him of Christ’s future judgment. He would stand before Him in eternity. If he kept that in mind, it would give him momentum in ministry. Whatever season, Timothy ought to be ready to preach the Word of God––to convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
Paul had such an urgency in his heart to transfer the responsibility of preaching the Word to his disciple, Timothy. The baton had been passed. This is the way things should be in the ministry. Think about it. God passed on His servant Moses’ leadership to Joshua (Joshua 1).
We can learn much from Paul’s charge to Timothy. First, it is necessary to live with no regrets. Accomplish all God has called you to do, and then you will not have regrets. Second, serve the Lord. We must be reminded that we too shall be judged at the Bema Seat of Christ, not for our sins which Christ already covered, but for our actions as believers:
...For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad (2 Corinthians 5:10).
Thirdly, we are to have an active faith. At any moment, we must be ready to share God’s Word with anyone and on any occasion.
When we preach or teach the Scriptures, we open the door for the Holy Spirit to do His work. God has not promised to bless oratory or clever preaching. He has promised to bless His Word.
