Grace Given to the Humble
Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”? But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
James 4:5-6
The Scriptures declare: “For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God” (Deuteronomy 4:24). And in Hebrews 12:29, we see the phrase repeated: For our God is a consuming fire. God is jealous over His children. His love is an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). He will not allow anything to take first place in our lives over Him.
Listen to what the Spirit of God is saying to us through the Scriptures: And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30). Sadly, we are often guilty of quenching the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives through our ungodly ways. God’s Spirit is grieved by our covetousness and sinful carnality in our lives.
What are some of the sins in the life of a Christian that will quench the Spirit of God? Listen, anything that does not give glory to God in our words and actions. Are you guilty of evil speaking, such as gossiping, criticizing, and judging? What about lying, stealing, anger, cussing, bitterness, unkindness and unforgiveness? All these things can grieve the Holy Spirit. He becomes hurt and He cannot do His work effectively in your life. How are you to be instead? The Bible tells us to ...be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you (Ephesians 4:32).
A lack of yielding to the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer is due to the attitude of the heart––pride. Understand, God resists the proud. Therefore in humility, as we recognize our sinfulness, we are broken before God. What happens when we humble ourselves before our Creator? He imparts to us His grace––beautiful.
The first work of the Spirit upon the soul, is to make a man look upon sin as an enemy, to deal with sin as an enemy, to hate sin as an enemy, to loathe sin as an enemy ... and to arm against it as an enemy.
