Assembled Together
...being assembled together with them [the disciples], He [Jesus] commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father....
Acts 1:4
Remember, Jesus died and rose again after three days. He was upon the earth for 40 days and 40 nights. At this point, the Holy Spirit had not yet been given. The word assembled in the Greek language means “to gather together.” This can also mean “to gather together as an assembly or congregation” or “to meet with one.” The disciples gathered together to meet with Jesus.
Some scholars believe the word assembled literally meant that Jesus and His disciples were eating and fellowshipping together. In the Middle East, eating together was considered to be a special time of bonding in relationships. This intimate setting of fellowship is when Jesus commanded His disciples not to leave Jerusalem. They needed to wait for the Promise of the Father––the Holy Spirit.
Jesus ascended to heaven, where He now sits at the right hand of the Father, and He awaits a great day––the day when the Father tells Jesus, our Bridegroom, “It has been long enough. Go get you’re Bride!” This is when the Rapture of the Church happens, and we shall be taken to heaven to be with Christ forever and ever.
While we wait for the promise of the Rapture, we as believers must continue to gather together. In the book of Hebrews, we find another exhortation that addresses the need for assembling together:
...not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching (Hebrews 10:25).
The Day referenced in this Scripture is the last Day of this present age–– the glorious Day when Christ will return from heaven, raise the dead, commence His final judgment, and rule and reign in His kingdom. Knowing the future, let us gather together to hear from the Lord.
People who move toward the church do so for two major reasons: to learn about God and to find some guidance and direction for living.
