Having a Common Faith
To Titus, a true son in our common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
Titus 1:4
Paul, as with Timothy, named Titus “a son in the faith.” Paul was very much like a father to these two young men. Notice, Paul and Titus were joined by a common faith. They believed in God’s plan of redemption manifested in the Word of God, and were called to preach it. The plan of salvation originated in eternity past, ...just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love (Ephesians 1:4).
God’s plan of salvation was all mapped out. When He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, the plan was rolled out. A way was made for anyone to come to know the grace, mercy, and peace of God. Know this: Without the grace of God, we cannot experience the peace of God. Paul, Timothy and Titus had experienced the greatest miracle that God could ever do within the heart of man––salvation.
Through the grace and mercy of God, we can have a relationship with Jesus Christ our Savior. He has redeemed us by His blood: In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace (Ephesians 1:7). This message of salvation has not only been preached by Paul, Timothy, and Titus, but it was preached by Jesus Christ, Himself:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, [Jesus] because He [God the Father] has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted... (Luke 4:18).
As believers, we have peace with God the Father, and we are no longer separated from Him because of our sin. We can draw near to God in full assurance of faith (Hebrews 10:22). No longer is there any separation or rejection; we have a close relationship with God. We can grow in His grace and come to understand the knowledge of His great love for us.
As God is the author of our salvation, so Christ is the
embodiment of our hope.
