Ambassadors of Christ
...and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which accords with godliness....
Titus 1:1
Paul, in his greeting, also called himself an apostle of Jesus Christ. The word apostle is an interesting word because it means “one to be sent out.” This means Paul became an ambassador for Jesus Christ. He represented Christ wherever he went. As Paul travelled, he gave people the Gospel message.
In fact, Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 NLT, that we are all ambassadors for Christ, having been entrusted with God’s message of reconciliation:
So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
An ambassador is a diplomat sent by a country as its official representative to a foreign country. As Christ’s ambassadors, we are sent into the world to represent Jesus Christ and to give His message to a lost and dying people. We plead with them to get their lives right with God. How do people get their lives right with God? They have to repent of their sin and, by faith, accept Jesus as their Savior. It is that simple.
Paul also mentioned the faith of God’s elect. Who are the elect? The Jews and the Gentiles who make up the church. Even though Paul was sent by God as an ambassador to the Gentiles, many Jews had also come to the faith. They had acknowledged the truth of the Gospel which Paul preached. They fully accepted that Jesus Christ is God––their Messiah.
What happened to the Jews and Gentiles who placed their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation? Jesus saved them and sanctified them. He gave them His Spirit to help them live a godly life.
To preach the whole truth is an awful charge. You and I, who are ambassadors for God, must not trifle, but we must tremble at God’s Word.
