Calvary Before Pentecost

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:20 KJV

Alan Redpath was a British evangelist, pastor and author. He really made an incredible impression on my heart. He should have been a Puritan, because he wrote and preached like those who were Puritans from the 17th Century! His most well-known quote is, “When God wants to do an impossible task, he takes an impossible man, and he crushes him.”

Another thought provoking quote Alan Redpath said is, “We need Calvary before we can experience Pentecost.” Calvary speaks of the Cross and the death of Jesus Christ. The Day of Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit came and empowered Christ’s followers. Before God can bring a revival and use our lives, the fire of the Holy Spirit must be poured out on us and on this ministry. We are going to have to experience death to self before we experience the Spirit-filled life––godliness.

A Puritan once asked this question, “What is godliness?” He then went on to describe godliness as being worship to God. This only happens when a person gives their whole body, soul and spirit to God in total submission. A believer in Christ needs to come into the presence of God in true humility. That, my friends, is true worship.

It is important to understand that godliness is not just singing to the Lord or raising your arms to Him. It is bringing yourself into the presence of Calvary––into the presence of the Lordship of Jesus Christ in complete surrender. To become a powerful godly man or woman, realize the need for change in your life. As you surrender your life to God, you will experience the power of God’s Holy Spirit.

God’s call to any man and the anointing of the Spirit for service are conditioned upon that man’s heart response.
