The Danger of Apathy
But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
James 2:20
People will say they are true believers in Christ, but do they have a faith that will bring forth true works? That is a question that needs to be answered by every person who calls themselves a believer in Christ.
The Bible does not teach eternal security. Read Ezekiel 3, 18 and 33. Understand, our salvation is secure as long as we abide in Christ (John 15). There are Christians who are living lives of sin and still believe that they will go to heaven; that is not true. Read through Paul’s epistles with the understanding that they were written to Christians, not non-believers. Paul gave a serious warning about the consequences of willful sin:
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).
We all fall short and sin, and daily, we can ask forgiveness of our sin (1 John 1:9). But to willfully practice sin, without any repentance, has consequences. In the life of a believer, there is a great need for a renewed fear of God: The fear of the Lord is to hate evil... (Proverbs 8:13). To fear the Lord means to stand in awe of who He is, and in knowing God, we learn to detest the things He abhors––sin.
As a pastor, I am concerned for the Church. Christians need to obey the Word of God. They should not be gossiping, lying, stealing, or committing sexual sin. Christians have the Holy Spirit, and they are responsible and accountable for their actions. May God wake up the Church from its apathy to a place of obedience and loving service to our Lord.
What make us Christians shrug our shoulders when we ought to be flexing our muscles? What makes us apathetic in a day when there are loads to lift, a world to be won and captives to be set free? Why are so many bored when the times demand action?
