Who is on the Throne?

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Romans 6:12-13

Paul drilled home another important objective––do not let sin reign in your mortal body. He made a clear distinction between the Spirit and the flesh; he separated the two––fully and completely. The words to reign are interesting words in the Greek language. They literally mean, “Do not let sin continue to sit on the throne––to be king.” Who is to be on the throne? The King––Jesus! Yet who sits on the throne governing your life, sin or the Spirit of God?

Paul gave us a command to follow: present yourselves to God. As a Christian, every day you must voluntarily present yourself to God as a living sacrifice–– by your own will! (Romans 12:1-2). Otherwise, if sin reigns, when temptation comes, you will constantly be tripping and falling. You will remain a sinful person and be unable to freely serve God. Yet as you present yourselves to God and allow the Spirit of God to reign on the throne, that sinful person you used to be will remain dead, and you will enjoy a victorious Christian life. As a believer, you are able to move forward in Christ to experience: joy, peace and love. Christians are brought to a place of joy and happiness–– just having fun because of all the Lord has done for them.

When sin is reigning in a person’s life, watch their countenance. They are always depressed. They have no joy. Remember this: conviction draws a person to the Cross––condemnation moves a person away from the Cross. So simple. We are not condemned at all, but we are convicted. Conviction brings us to repentance.

In every Christian’s heart there is a cross and a throne, and the Christian is on the throne till he puts himself on the cross. If he refuses the cross he remains on the throne.
