The Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures
But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 3:14-15
Paul did not want Timothy to be insecure in his call to serve God. He reassured Timothy of what he had learned about the Holy Scriptures from childhood. Paul, himself, reaffirmed Timothy’s faith with all he had taught him. Timothy had a solid foundation in the Christian faith––he had become very knowledgeable in God’s Word.
Who was Timothy’s grandmother and mother? They were two Jewish women who had placed their faith in Jesus Christ. Paul recounted:
...when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also (2 Timothy 1:5).
Since Timothy was a little boy, these faithful guardians had taught him the Torah––the first five books of the Old Testament––the Pentateuch. They taught him the Holy Scriptures, the Word of God, proving to him by the Scriptures that salvation was only found through Christ. By faith, Timothy came to know Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Then Paul came alongside this young man, took him under his wing, and began to disciple him.
The Bible is the inspired Word of God: ...knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21). The Scriptures will make you wise in understanding the only way to have salvation.
As a child, who do you accredit for teaching you about the Bible? Thank God for Christian parents who diligently teach the truth of the Bible to their children!
Life is just a schoolroom with a glorious opportunity
to prepare us for eternity.
