Knowing God
“None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
Hebrews 8:11-12
Why will Israel not have to teach their neighbor or brother to know the Lord? Every person in Israel will personally know the Lord––from the least to the greatest. This is just beautiful. God is going to reveal who He is to every Jew. He is their Redeemer, the One who loves them with an everlasting love:
Isaiah 54:5: “For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is His name; and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth.”
Jeremiah 31:3-4: The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. Again I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt, O virgin of Israel!”
The writer of Hebrews quotes from the prophecy spoken by Jeremiah:
“No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more” (Jeremiah 31:34).
God will bless and forgive the nation of Israel for their sin. He will remember their sin no more. This is exactly what the Lord does with us when we repent; He promises to remove our sin: As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us (Psalm 103:12). God promises to bury our sin: He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea (Micah 7:19).
Knowing God means knowing His promises––knowing you can be forgiven.
“I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be My people.”
