Fault Finding
Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—“
Hebrews 8:8
God found fault with His people in the Old Testament. They often broke His commandments. He promised to make a new covenant with them. It would be a brand-new covenant and not according to what was first established between the Lord and their forefathers:
“...not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord” (Hebrews 8:9).
The Lord reminded His people of their history, when Moses was given the Ten Commandments. What did God’s people do after they had received them? They were disobedient and broke God’s commandments. When He led them out of Egypt, they rebelled. They crossed the Red Sea and began the journey to the Promised Land; but because of unbelief, complaints and rebellion, they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years:
“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me. Say to them, ‘As I live,’ says the Lord, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you: The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above’ ” (Numbers 14:27-29).
Imagine, an entire generation died in the wilderness except for Joshua and Caleb who had faith in the Lord. Those under 20 years old were finally led by Joshua into the Promised Land. As Israel’s history continues, there was more fault-finding; because after Joshua’s death, in Judges 2:10, we read: When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel. Apostasy!
This would be the first step in Apostasy; men first forget the true, and then adore the false.
