A More Excellent Ministry

But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.
Hebrews 8:6

Paul the Apostle taught believers about a new covenant that is much superior to what was established in the Old Testament. The New Testament contrasts with the Old Testament, because what was enacted by the earthly tabernacle and the Levitical priesthood was a shadow of things to come. The New Testament is a fulfillment of the Old Testament, giving us far better promises which works in our lives unto eternal life.

Through Jesus’ servanthood toward us, we are saved: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28 ASV). Jesus obtained a more excellent ministry than who? Jesus’ ministry superseded that of Aaron’s and Moses’. Jesus is the Mediator of a better covenant. He stands in the middle as a bridge between God and man:  For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5).

What is so amazing to me is that, as we have been forgiven of our sin and have been reconciled to God through Jesus Christ, we also have been given a ministry. What is our ministry? It is a call to help others become reconciled to God. In 2 Corinthians 5:18-20, we have our calling:

Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.

In what ways are you using the ministry God has given you to reach others?

The ministry of reconciliation is hard but holy work. As the Body of Christ, we are set free to measure ourselves by our identification with Christ, not by the metrics of this world. Keep going, Church.
