A Better Sacrifice
Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
Hebrews 9:23
Imagine, the earthly Tabernacle and all the items within it are copies of the ones in heaven. The heavenly tabernacle is far superior to the earthly.
It was necessary for a time that earthly animal sacrifices sufficed. But the blood of lambs and calves and turtle doves was only a shadow of a better way that was to come. That is why Jesus Christ had to appear to become the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
Think about the Jews today. They have a great problem because they no longer have animals to sacrifice for their sins in the Temple. There is no blood being shed for the remission of their sins. Instead, on the Day of Atonement, the Jews fast, ask forgiveness, and attempt to do good works for all the bad things they have done in their lives.
How many people have that same kind of mentality? They believe that their good deeds will somehow bring them into good standing before God. That is so far from the truth! The reality of our grave situation is this: But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags... (Isaiah 64:6). Knowing this, what can we possibly do? How can we have a relationship with God who cannot tolerate sin in His holy presence? We need a better sacrifice––Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is both the only price and sacrifice by which eternal redemption is obtained for believers.
