Sin’s Agreement

Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband.
Acts 5:9-10

Sapphira gave Peter a deceptive answer; she did not speak the truth. She had the opportunity to humble herself and repent, but she decided to carry on with her pretense. She openly agreed with her husband to lie without any remorse. She lied before a holy God.

Peter immediately spoke judgment. Imagine, one minute Sapphira was standing, and the next second, she was on the ground dead! Just like her husband, her sin caused her to forfeit her life. God wanted His Church to be pure. God will not be mocked; He will judge sin. Peter wrote: For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God… (1 Peter 4:17). Having times of self-examination and confession of sin keeps us in right standing with God (1 John 1:9).

There are so many people who habitually lie and think nothing of it. People try to cover their mistakes by lying. Why not be honest about what they did wrong? It is better to confess the truth. Lying digs a bigger hole for them to fall into; it will catch up with them. Others will get to know their characters. When they see them, they will say, “Here comes the liar.”

Is that what you want to be known as––a liar? Know this: When you willfully lie, you are testing the Spirit of God. The Scriptures tell us:

“…the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (Revelation 21:8).

As a Christian, you are no longer to lie. Lying has eternal consequences. Ask God to forgive you and ask Him to help you to always speak the truth.

Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.
