Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14

Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an American Federal Holiday marking his birthday. The holiday takes place every third Monday in January, which is near King’s actual birthday celebrated on January 15.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave a strong message to people. It was a message of peace and racial justice. He spoke simply, clearly and powerfully so people could understand the seriousness of the message he proclaimed. There must be no room in the human race for racism. King reasoned with people, hoping to reach the human heart. He likened man’s actions of hate to darkness, and man’s actions of love to light:

“Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. marched in peaceful protests. As a minister and civil rights activist, he was keenly aware of the many injustices people endured. King is well-known for his moving speech, “I Have a Dream.” He felt sure that “Now is the time to make justice a reality for all God’s children.” Tragically, he was assassinated April 4, 1968. His life and legacy continue to inspire others. In fact, his message is far from silenced, for it is still carried on by many others today.

Peace if possible, truth at all costs.
