The Excellence Knowledge of Christ
But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them rubbish, that I may gain Christ....
Philippians 3:7-8
Paul’s passion was only one track, and that was Jesus. Look again at Paul’s attitude in these verses; the only thing he was concerned about was to gain Christ. The word gain means “to win.” He won Christ! Our Lord became the most important person in Paul’s life as he looked forward to eternity.
Let me ask you this: “How is your love life––your personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Are you developing a deep love for Him?” The greatest truth necessary to grasp is not how much you love Him, but how much Jesus loves you! First John 4:19 tells us, We love Him because He first loved us. Once you were a lost sinner in the world. Never forget that finding the love of Christ is the greatest event in your life.
Paul also voiced that everything he had gained in this world was given to him from his Creator. Therefore, he desired only one thing––the excellent knowledge of Christ––a meaningful relationship with the Lord. In Jesus, Paul was complete. Everything else was seen as total rubbish. I love that.
As a Christian, your relationship with God is not to be legalistic, but it is a love relationship. You give your tithes out of love; you worship the Lord out of a sincere love for Him; and you serve the Lord out of love. Always seek God’s will and hear His voice. He will reveal to you how He desires to use your life. What you do for Him in this world counts in eternity.
It is important to go to Bible studies to gain knowledge and understanding about Christ as you build your relationship with Him. However, it is wise to examine your relationship with Christ to make sure you have not only gained head knowledge, but formed a genuine love relationship with Him.
If a man only knows Christ in the head, but does not trust him with the heart, what is the good of his knowledge? It will rather ruin than save him.
