A New Year Is Here!

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
Psalm 143:10 NIV

A New Year is here! Some people wonder, What will this New Year bring?  I ask you, “What will you do for the Lord this New Year?” “What plans are you already making?” “Where is your life heading?” Some people are already planning vacations, house restorations, moving to a different state, career changes, or important educational decisions for their children. Again, I ask you, “What will you do for the Lord this year?”

I like the heart of the psalmist––he has a heart after God’s own heart. Yes, the writer is David, King of Israel. In this psalm, his prayer was not only for God’s deliverance from his enemies, but for His divine guidance. He prayed that God would teach him to do His will. Again, we so often make plans, but do we first seek God’s will and His guidance? Why not first lift up in prayer this New Year by asking God to make His will known to you? Why? He is your God! Seeking His will is a top priority for your life!

Second, ask for the Holy Spirit to lead you. So often we are led by our emotions or how other people advise us. That is very unsteady ground! Let God lead your life by His Spirit. Find confirmation in His Word. Learn to hear God’s voice and let His Spirit be your guide––your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21).

If you cannot be led by the Lord, you will not be able to lead anyone else. So why not get on your knees and pray about the New Year ahead. Align your life with God’s will. Pray for vision and passion. Then God will lead you to a place where you can serve Him.

When we come to Christ, we’re no longer the most important person in the world to us; Christ is. Instead of living only for ourselves, we have a higher goal: to live for Jesus.
