Insufficient Offerings

For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.
Hebrews 10:2-4

For thousands of years, the Jews sacrificed animals for the people’s sin. Through the Levitical order, this was only a judicial forgiveness and did not remove guilt from the people's hearts. Continual animal sacrifices became a reminder that there was a need for a better way––the blood of another for sin.

The Old Testament sacrificial system was only a picture of the future work that Jesus Christ would accomplish on the Cross. That is why John the Baptist told the crowds: “Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Why did John say that? He was proclaiming to the Jews, those who sacrificed lambs and other animals for people’s sin, that this would no longer be necessary. Why? Jesus would become the sacrificial Lamb to die once for the sin of the world––Jews and Gentiles. This is a beautiful picture for us to behold.

Again, the writer of Hebrews explained: For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. There it is. How much plainer do we need it? We no longer need animal sacrifices; we need Jesus Christ. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin; He has taken away our guilt.

Every individual needs to come to grips with the fact that they are a sinner in need of a Savior. We need to come to a place where we are conscious of our sin, guilt and shame. There is nothing else that can take away our sin and guilt––only Christ. Do you understand?

Jesus can take away your sin and guilt by the offering of Himself. Why? His sacrifice for sin was sufficient. Which means what? When you accept Jesus as your Savior, in that second, you can experience His peace.

The only sin Jesus ever had was ours, and the only righteousness we can ever have is His.
