The Deity of Christ

For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily....
Colossians 2:9

Paul strongly refuted the Gnostic way of thinking and declared Christ to be God. Those who believed in Gnosticism professed they alone possessed a full knowledge of spiritual depth that only they could enjoy. This wisdom released them from earthly things and put them in touch with heavenly things––angels. They believed in a powerful spiritual world that used material things to attack mankind. They also held to a form of astrology, and they believed that angelic beings ruled heavenly bodies and influenced the affairs of the earth.

The Gnostics believed they had a full knowledge, a spiritual depth. They became the spiritual aristocracy in the church. This heresy promised people such a close union with God. They achieved a spiritual perfection through their teachings and ceremonies as prescribed. What does the Bible teach? There is no perfection for us until we get to heaven.

Gnostics declared that Jesus was not God incarnate in the flesh. They thought Him to be equal with the angels, but not God. It was taught by the Gnostics that God created Jesus. This teaching was pure heresy. Jesus was 100% human and 100% God. As God and Man, Jesus died for our sins on the Cross.

Paul and Epaphras fought hard to refute this heretical teaching––it was not sound doctrine. This heretical teaching was a manmade philosophy that was not based on the divine truth found in the Word of God. They gave simple, but powerful, theology.

What kinds of worldly doctrines have you embraced? Scripture is infallible––dependable. Jesus is Creator; He is God. Trust what the Bible teaches about Christ––in Him alone we find salvation.

“Depend upon it, my hearer, you never will go to heaven unless you are prepared to worship Jesus Christ as God.”
~C.H. Spurgeon~
