A Father-Son Letter

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, to Timothy, a true son in the faith: grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Timothy 1:1-2

As we leave the Prison Epistles, we begin our new study in the book of 1 Timothy to follow the life of Paul until he finishes his race and stands in the presence of our Lord and Savior. First Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus are referred to as the Pastoral Epistles. First Timothy was written from Macedonia, probably Philippi, around 65 AD (1 Timothy 1:3).

As we delve into the book of 1 Timothy, we shall grow to understand church order and discipline, women’s position in the church, the behavior of the believer in the house of the Lord, and, once again, the dangers of heretics among the congregation in the Church. It is important to note that these Pastoral Epistles are not only for pastors, but they can be utilized by Christian leaders and lay people in the church.

Interestingly, when you study theology, you will come across what is called, the school of higher criticism. Here you will discover what some scholars discuss and believe about the writer of the book of 1 Timothy. Who is the writer? Unfortunately, some scholarly men do not believe in the inspiration and illumination of the Scriptures, when the Bible clearly states: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God... (2 Timothy 3:16).

Seriously, you do not need to spend twelve weeks trying to find out who wrote the book of 1 Timothy! It states the author’s name in the first verse: Paul, an apostle who is writing to Timothy, a true son in the faith....

The Scriptures in their own sphere are like God in the universe--all-sufficient. All the light and power the mind of man can need in spiritual things is revealed in Scripture.
