Insulting the Spirit of Grace

Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
Hebrews 10:28-29

Paul warned the Hebrew believers, “Do not become apostates.” There was a real danger in going back to Judaism. Having a knowledge of the truth, they had accepted Christ. They knew that killing animals––shedding their blood to cover their sin––was no longer necessary. Paul had helped them understand that Jesus’ blood was shed once and for all. Jesus’ blood was sufficient; His sacrifice pleased His Father, and the Spirit of grace was poured out upon the penitent:

So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.  He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins (Ephesians 1:6-7 NLT).

A new covenant was established. Why then would Hebrew believers be tempted to turn around and count Jesus’ blood as nothing? It would be a slap in the face to God who had provided a way for their sins to be forgiven––for salvation. If they went back to killing animals, it would be an insult to the Spirit of grace. Paul reminded them of the Old Testament Scriptures when judgment was pronounced on those who rejected Moses’ Law. It was a serious sin to transgress against God’s covenant, and if the charge was found to be true, they were stoned to death (Deuteronomy 17:2-7).

Surely, the judgment would be so much worse for those who willfully sinned by rejecting the blood of the new covenant. It was as if they were trampling on the Son of God––counting His blood as nothing––when His blood is most precious, spilled for the price of our redemption. I think the Scriptures are very clear.

It is insane and insulting to trust our feelings and not trust the Savior.
