The Call to Ministry
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry....
1 Timothy 1:12
Paul knew he had received God’s grace which enabled him to be in the ministry. It was a great gift! He had a good philosophy about ministry. He knew it was not a job where he got paid; it was a special call that God had on his life.
Some people have the misconception that you have to be a very special person to be serving in the Church––in ministry––but ministry is all around us. There are people in need of Christ all around us. God uses ordinary people, such as a doctor, lawyer, teacher, electrician, dentist, construction worker or student.
God has given each person talents and gifts. You can be a Christian carpenter and be in the ministry––there is nothing wrong with that. You do not have to separate from your occupation after becoming a Christian. God can use you wherever you are employed. God has gifted me with a talent for martial arts. When I came to Christ, I did not have to stop using that talent. I was able to be a minister and use my martial arts to reach people with the Gospel.
Ministry is a call of God upon a person’s life, not so they can become great, but so they can become a servant to people by using their individual gifts, talents and capacities. Within the Church, maybe God will call you to be an usher, a Sunday School teacher, or to get involved with missions. That is ministry. God has a call for our lives today!
Know this: When you have a call to ministry, it is accomplished through God’s enabling. Do not be fearful. When God places a call on your life, He will equip you and give you His wisdom and knowledge to fulfill that work. You do not have to go to seminary to do that. Rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to anoint your life. Step out by faith and serve God.
Ministry has been the most beautiful thing that has happened in my life.
My call to the ministry was not a miraculous or supernatural something. On the contrary it was an inner urge calling me to serve humanity.
