Warning About Rejection of Christ

For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.
Hebrews 10:26-27

As we examine the text carefully, we will come to understand that these verses of Scripture are speaking of Jewish believers––those who had received the knowledge of the truth of the Gospel, but were on the brink of completely turning away from their faith and rejecting Christ altogether.

Think for a moment about the word willfully. It means that a person has thought about what they are about to do. They plan it, follow through, and do it. This, my friends, is sinning willfully against God. It is not a sin of ignorance; it is something that is planned.

There are people who have sat where you have been sitting in the congregation––those who, at one time, had received the grace, love and mercy of God, but chose to walk away and go back into the world. They were here on Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights and Sunday nights, carrying their Bibles with them. They placed Christian stickers on their cars and even knew Christian lingo––praise the Lord, hallelujah, and thank you, Jesus. It makes me wonder, although many people come to Calvary Chapel and listen to the services, how many are truly saved?

Paul was not only speaking to the Jewish believers, but he was speaking to us as well. If you have made a decision to follow Jesus Christ, do not reject the truth and count His blood as having no value. Through the power of the blood of Jesus Christ, a person receives forgiveness; they are cleansed and washed from their sins. Why on earth would they choose to sin willfully, knowing that their sin will separate them from God?

Paul brought a great warning to believers who were thinking about going back into the world––to apostatize. They willfully deny the truth of God to go back to living a life of sin. That disqualifies them from entering the Kingdom of God. Instead of receiving grace, they face God’s judgment.

...those who chose to reject God during their lifetime on earth will be separated from him for eternity. This is not God's desire, but man's own choice. God holds every man accountable for his rejection of Christ.
