Pilgrims Just Passing Through

“And God gave him [Abraham] no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him. “
Acts 7:5

Again, the leaders in the Sanhedrin should have known their history. They studied the Pentateuch––the first five books of the Bible––but they failed to accept the testimony of Stephen. God used Stephen to accurately expound the Scriptures to them, and yet their hearts were so hardened. They were actually in denial of what the Word of God said.

They failed to see that Abraham’s descendants led to Jesus Christ. This is the only important lineage in the Bible for us to follow, because it is the genealogy of the Messiah––from Abraham to Isaac, to Jacob and among his twelve sons, Judah. This lineage continued through kings––King David and King Solomon––and finally weaved its way to Joseph, Jesus’ legal father (Matthew 1:1-17). His wife Mary who conceived Christ in her womb, being overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, also traces Jesus’ lineage through her family (Luke 3:23-38).

Abraham continued his journey after the death of his father. God did not want him to get comfortable and settle down. He wanted him to keep moving. Even though Abraham was old, God promised him he would bless him with a child––Isaac. God honored His Word and established a place where Abraham’s family would be blessed.

God calls us to be pilgrims just passing through this world. He does not want us to become comfortable. There is a danger of settling down and becoming comfortable. We need to keep moving, serving the Lord, and seeking Him all the time. He wants to bless us. When we become comfortable, there is the tendency to backslide. We cling to this world––such was the case with Abraham’s nephew, Lot.

These [the saints of old] all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
~Hebrews 11:13~
