Straying From God’s Truth
...from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.
1 Timothy 1:6-7
False teachers were trying to back up their false doctrine without really knowing the Word of God. They assumed upon the Scriptures. They really did not have any substance to prove their doctrine. This caused a perversion of God’s Word in their teaching.
False teachers in the church had strayed away from the truth of the Gospel. The word strayed is from the NKJV, but the KJV uses the word “swerved,” which is a better word. The Greek term is the same word used for “missing the mark” when a person sins. False teachers had missed the mark in their teachings, because they had left out the teachings of the Cross of Jesus Christ and His atonement.
These heretics had turned aside to idle talk––a medical term used to describe a dislocated limb. How painful! It speaks of the real pain caused to someone when they become dislocated from the truth of the Scriptures to believe another gospel. These teachers injured people. They did not hold true to the text. That is why Timothy needed to teach healthy doctrine to the people, to keep them in the truth.
These wretched men desired to be teachers of the Law, but they did not understand that mixing the Mosaic Law with Jesus was leading them, and those whom they led astray, to utter destruction. As Paul taught the Galatians: Therefore the law was out tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith (Galatians 3:24). We fail to keep the Law so it drives us to God for salvation. We live our lives through the grace of God. As Christians, we have placed our full trust and faith in Him alone for salvation.
The moment someone chooses to trust in Jesus Christ, his sins are wiped away, and he is adopted into God’s family. That individual is set apart as a child of God, with a sacred purpose.
