President’s Day

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all
who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all
godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in
the sight of God our Savior….
1Timothy 2:1-3

Paul exhorted believers to pray. He gave four examples of how we should pray. He first used the word supplication which means “to beg.” Supplication is described as an intense entreaty, a pouring out of your heart to God. During a time of supplication, a Christian’s prayers should be heartfelt as they pray for friends and family, for their children and grandchildren, for people who come across their paths daily, for those in their neighborhoods, or for people shopping at the local stores.

Second, Paul desired that Christians would use their prayers as a spiritual weapon against the enemy for all believers: …praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints… (Ephesians 6:18). Make it a discipline to pray for your fellow believers. Never give up praying, because God will answer your prayers: The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much (James 5:16). Never give up praying!

Prayers are to be made for all men––for kings, the President, all those in Congress, and those in the House of Representatives. As Christians, it is our duty to intercede for those who have been placed in positions of government. Some need salvation, and all of them need wisdom in making important decisions for our great country.

In our daily prayers, we draw close to God. We enter into an intimate time of communication with Him. Third, intercessory prayer addresses God; it is a term used for approaching a king––as we are approaching God––seeking His presence and hearing from Him on behalf of others. Fourth, prayer should include the giving of thanks for all God has done for us in the past, in the present, and in the future.

I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer.
As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent,
let words of prayer be on our lips.
