What Happens When We Die?

For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1 Corinthians 15:53

According to the Bible, the moment you and I die, our spirit goes to be with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). There will be no more pain or suffering. Then at the Rapture, these corruptible bodies will be changed into immortal, beautiful bodies. This hope encourages us as we see our mortal bodies deteriorate as we age. The Bible tells us: Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16).

Therefore, as Christians, we also do not have to fear death. Consider these Scripture verses that calm our troubled thoughts about death:

1 Corinthians 15:55-57: O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 2:14-15: Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Our Savior, Jesus Christ, has tasted death for everyone:

Hebrews 2:9: But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.

Listen, do not fear; the moment you take your last breath, the heavenly angels will come to take you home––to heaven where you will be in the presence of the Lord.

Jesus Christ our Lord surrendered in order that He might win; He destroyed His enemies by dying for them and conquered death by allowing death to conquer Him.
