Valentine’s Day
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
Valentine’s Day is special for couples and singles alike; they express their love toward a spouse or, if dating, a boyfriend or girlfriend. Did you know this is the best day for florists? In America, people will spend 2.6 billion dollars on flowers. Valentine’s Day generates the demand for a whopping 58 million pounds of chocolate. Conveying how much you love someone by sending a Valentine’s card joins you with other Americans who are spending 1.5 billion dollars on cards. Then consider the cost of all the perfume, cologne, plush toys, and fine jewelry that are given on Valentine’s Day. Some surveys have said millennials prefer a romantic hike or boat ride instead of gifts––something to think about!
Did you also know that every year on Valentine’s Day there are about 220,000 proposals and 2.2 million marriages that take place? Perhaps this year, you are thinking about popping the question to your girlfriend. I ask you, “How will you demonstrate your love for her on this Valentine’s Day?”
However you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, I want you to take a moment to think about the incredible way God demonstrated His love toward us. As an expression of His love toward sinners, destined to die physically and spiritually, He sent His Beloved Son, whom He greatly loved, to rescue and redeem us.
Jesus demonstrated God’s great love for us when He experienced all the agonies of the Cross. His love was sacrificial, life surrendering, and life giving. God’s desire is to give us the gift of eternal life so that we can be with Him for all eternity. In a way, John 3:16 is His proposal to us: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Today, I pop this question to you: “Knowing God greatly loves you, will you accept His gift of salvation and say a resounding, ‘Yes!’ to accepting Jesus as your Savior?”
God allows us to feel the frailty of human love so that we'll appreciate the strength of His.
