Doing God’s Will
Therefore, when He [Jesus] came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—in the volume of the book it is written of Me—to do Your will, O God.’ ”
Hebrews 10:5-7
The writer of the book of Hebrews quoted from Psalm 40:6-8. But even more clearly in Hebrews 10:5-7, is revealed the Incarnation of Jesus Christ: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body you have prepared for me.” Jesus received a human body! He is 100% deity, and 100% humanity! God provided a sacrifice for our sin in the Person of Jesus Christ. This is the reason for why He came into the world. Jesus came to earth to accomplish God’s will. That was His mission.
Let us be clear––what was the will of God for His Son? Jesus was called to suffer and die on the Cross so that He could redeem us to Himself. That is the heart of God. Did you know that in eternity, before the foundation of the earth was laid, a plan of salvation was formulated among the Godhead? Consider the subtle mention of the plan of salvation existing before the world existed:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love... (Ephesians 1:3-4).
God provided the sacrifice for sin––not man. God was not satisfied with animal sacrifices. They were not enough––insufficient––only a covering for sin. In fact, the Scripture goes as far as to say, “In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure.” But what would satisfy the Father? Isaiah 53:10 tells us: Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin.... Christ’s blood was sufficient. What would nullify the written requirements against us? The Cross (Colossians 2:14).
The heart of the gospel is redemption, and the essence of redemption is the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ.
