The Future of the Church
...giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love....
Colossians 1:12-13
Paul wrote a letter to the Colossians knowing that people living in this age were very futuristic. They believed in dualism and thought much about time and space. They thought about contrary forces that fought against each other, such as––matter and spirit, evil and good, darkness and light.
We need this important letter to the Colossians because we are living in similar days. Think about it. How many people wake up in the morning and consult the stars for their future by reading their horoscopes? People need to trust in Jesus Christ for their future. It is important to learn to hear God’s voice speaking to them through His Holy Spirit.
Christians today need to be challenged to make a solid commitment to Christ, just as Joshua gathered God’s people together and challenged them:
“...choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15).
Choose to serve the Lord! For the future of the Church, it is important to train our children and grandchildren in the ways of the Lord. What will happen to them if we do not disciple the young and tell them the truth about Jesus Christ? I believe mothers and fathers need to teach their children the Word of God. Christ has to become everything in their lives. The future of the Church depends upon it.
Having been delivered from the power of darkness and conveyed into His Kingdom, our future is secure in Christ as we abide in Him (John 15:4). We look forward to an eternal inheritance. That is why we need to be in church, listening to Bible studies and having fellowship––we need each other––we need the Lord!
We know not what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future.
