The Miracle of a Child
“For he [John] will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.”
Luke 1:15-16
After an encounter with the angel Gabriel, Zacharias unable to speak. Remember, the angel came to bring him glad tidings. Zacharias’ wife Elizabeth was going to have a son, but the priest had a lapse of faith. He was in disbelief because his wife was well past the age of childbearing. Due to his unbelief, Zacharias remained mute. He would not be able to speak until the day all that was spoken to him came to pass.
Zacharias was instructed to name his son John. Gabriel, as God’s angelic messenger, told him about the child’s life. God had a tremendous plan for John. He would drink no wine or strong drink. This spoke of his separation to God which was likened to the call of a Nazarite. John would be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit from within his mother’s womb. His call in life was to turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
Parents need to see the value of their children. Each child is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). As Creator, God formed each child in the womb: For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made... (Psalm 139:13-14). Children are to be seen as gifts from God: Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward (Psalm 127:3).
Imagine the beautiful possibilities of your children. They have their own God-given gifts and talents to be used in serving Him. The Lord has a plan for their individual lives. He has called them and given them a purpose to fulfill.
You may speak but a word to a child, and in that child there may be slumbering a noble heart which shall stir the Christian Church in years to come.
