The Wonderful Names of Christ

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

In Philippians 2:9, we learned that the name JESUS is the name which is above every name. At His name, every knee shall bow! The names of Christ are important to us because they give a broader picture of His character and His purposes. A prophecy was given by the prophet Isaiah concerning Jesus’ birth; it gives to us an incredible list of Jesus’ names: Child, Son, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.

Christ left heaven, came to earth, and was born of a virgin as an innocent Child. Although human, He was deity––the Son of God. Consider the proclamation given to Mary by the Angel Gabriel concerning Jesus’ names and their great significance:

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:31-33).

In Bethlehem, the Son of God was born in a humble shelter and placed in a manger. The name Jesus has an incredible meaning in its Hebrew translation Joshua, which means “Yahweh saves” or “Yahweh is salvation.” JESUS came for one solitary purpose––the salvation of men.

The Wonderful name of JESUS speaks of Christ as admirable and distinguished. Counselor should cause us to consult with Him for any problem. Mighty God tells of His power, and Everlasting Father reveals His eternal existence. He is our perpetual Father. Prince of Peace is an exalted name––the Ruler of rulers. As such, He seeks our welfare, mediates to restore our relationship with God, and gives us His peace.

To holy people the very name of Jesus is a name to feed upon, a name to transport. His name can raise the dead and transfigure and beautify the living.
