Tidings of Great Joy
Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.
Luke 2:8-9
While shepherds were watching over their sheep in the fields, all of a sudden an angel of the Lord stood before them. The glory of the Lord illuminated the darkness of this night. As they looked toward the miraculous sight, they were filled with fear and awe. What was happening before their very eyes? The angel spoke to these humble shepherds:
“Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger” (Luke 2:10-12).
God chose humble shepherds in a field to hear about the birth of His Son. He wanted them to know the Savior had been born in Bethlehem. They could see Christ the Lord for themselves. All they needed to do was go into the City of David, and they would find the Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.
Instantly, the night sky was filled with a multitude of heavenly host––angels praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Luke 2:14).
Most people have heard this angelic message and know that a Savior–– Christ the Lord––has been born in Bethlehem. But how has the message of Christ’s birth changed your life? A Savior needs to be sought for forgiveness of sins. There should be repentance and acceptance. He is a King who ought to be adored and worshiped.
O come all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye O come ye
To Bethlehem
Come and behold Him
Born the King of angels
