Son of the Highest

“He [Jesus] will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:32-33

The angel Gabriel made known to Mary, the Person of Christ. Jesus would be great––the Son of the Highest. Yet Jesus would also be closely connected with an earthly king, King David, and his royal throne. Therefore, cradled within Mary’s womb would be the long-awaited Messiah––Jesus Christ.

In 2 Samuel 7:12-13, 16 (NIV), and Psalm 89:3-4, 28-29, God promised King David that the Messiah would come and sit on his throne forever:

“ ‘…When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever … Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ”

“I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David: ‘Your seed I will establish forever, and build up your throne to all generations.’ ” Selah … “My mercy I will keep for him forever, and My covenant shall stand firm with him. His seed also I will make to endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.”

Directed by God in his message to Mary, Gabriel gave Jesus some very important names: Son of the Highest, Holy One, Son of God (Luke 1:32; 35). There is no question and no doubt as to whom Mary carried within her womb––deity––God.

This Christmas, know that the Child born and laid in the manger is God, and know what this means for your life.

“He bequeaths us His manger, from which to learn how God came down to man, and His cross to teach us how man may go up to God.”
