Son of the Highest
“He [Jesus] will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:32-33
The angel Gabriel made known to Mary, the Person of Christ. Cradled within Mary’s womb would be the long awaited Messiah––Jesus Christ. The angel Gabriel continued with his announcement to Mary. Jesus would be great––the Son of the Highest––the Son of the Most High God! Yet Jesus would also be closely connected with an earthly king, King David, and his royal throne.
In 2 Samuel 7:12-13, 16, NIV, and Psalm 89:1-4, 28-29, God promised King David that the Messiah would come and sit on his throne forever:
“ ‘…When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever … Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ”
“I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David: ‘Your seed I will establish forever, and build up your throne to all generations.’ ” Selah … “My mercy I will keep for him forever, and My covenant shall stand firm with him. His seed also I will make to endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.”
Directed by the Most High God in his message to Mary, consider for yourself the many names given to this Child: Son, Jesus, Holy One, Son of God, Son of David, and Son of the Highest. There is no question and no doubt as to whom Mary carried within her womb.
May the Scriptures erase all doubt in your heart of whom Jesus Christ is this Christmas.
The deity of Christ is the key doctrine of the scriptures. Reject it, and the Bible becomes a jumble of words without any unifying theme. Accept it, and the Bible becomes an intelligible and ordered revelation of God in the person of Jesus Christ.
