The Advent Calendar

So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:6-7 NIV

Commercially, stores’ shelves have already been stocked with items to entice shoppers to shop early for Christmas. At this time, as a special Christmas tradition, many families purchase an Advent Calendar so they can begin their exciting countdown to Christmas.

In the past, the date of Advent Calendars coincided with the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day. As this date changes each year, most Advent Calendars begin on December 1, which is today! In church history, Advent Calendars were used 1,500 years ago. The word Advent in Latin is adventus meaning “arrival” or “coming.”

Did you know that Advent Calendars carry an inspiring message of expectation and hope by helping us remember the miraculous events surrounding Jesus’ birth? These reflections will help keep joy in this busy Christmas season. It has also been said that Advent calendars have a dual purpose. First, they help us cherish the birth of Christ; but second, they help encourage us to wait for His Second Coming.

As we enter the first day of December, take time each and every day to stop your busy schedule and reflect on the real reason we celebrate Christmas. As a Christian, for me, I like to celebrate Christmas each day of the calendar year!

No other day on the calendar catches the imagination of young and old alike as does Christmas. It’s a high and holy day—a day when the veil is drawn back and we get a fresh view of eternity. Such a vision of truth should be spread near and far.
