The BRANCH

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “that I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.”
Jeremiah 23:5-6

Once again, we are told by the prophet Jeremiah of a King who will reign and prosper, One who comes from the lineage of David––a Branch of Righteousness. Who is this Branch of Righteousness? This is a direct reference to the Messiah. It is understood that the Branch is an offspring both coming from the direct lineage of King David, but also deity, God.

This prophecy speaks of a future time of Israel’s restoration when Jesus returns. A Branch of Righteousness in Hebrew is the name Jehovah Tsidkenu, meaning “The Lord is our Righteousness.” He will execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. The Branch will set up the throne of God and His kingdom upon the earth. Consider the psalmist’s description of His reign: Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; mercy and truth go before Your face (Psalm 89:14). God will fulfill this precious promise to His people.

God’s people had a great anticipation of their King because it was written in Scripture:

“ ‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest, you and your companions who sit before you, for they are a wondrous sign; for behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH ’ ” (Zechariah 3:8).

“ ‘ “Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH! From His place He shall branch out, and He shall build the temple of the LORD; yes, He shall build the temple of the LORD. He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule on His throne; so He shall be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace shall be between them both” ’ ” (Zechariah 6:12-13).

These are incredible Scriptures all pointing to the coming Christ. They speak of His humanity, His deity, His Servanthood and His Priesthood.

Wake up, see your own wretchedness, and fly to the Lord Jesus. He is the righteousness of God, for He Himself is God. Only believing in His righteousness will you be delivered from condemnation.
